In today’s Gospel (John 1:35 – 42) we hear John the Baptist point his friends towards Jesus – something that we also do for each other.  Maybe most importantly we hear Jesus ask those first inquirers “what are you looking for?”    Jesus also asks us this question.  And this is a question we can also ask ourselves, for it seems that for so many of us – maybe not all of us – but many of us – that no matter what we may achieve, no matter how much we attain, no matter how much good is in our lives, we still might have a bit of an empty feeling, kind of like something is missing, that something is not exactly right.  And if we feel this way the answer is likely that we still need to find Jesus.  Whether we know it or not, it is only Christ that can fill our heart’s desire.  Whether we know it or not, it is Christ that we are looking for. And if we faithfully turn to him each day we will find Him because he is there just waiting for us – actually not just waiting, but beckoning, because He loves us so.

An apt counterpart to the first reading–i.e., from 1 Samuel 3, a poignant story of faith.
